Fundamental Duties


1. What are fundamental duties?

They serve as reminder for duties towards country and mentioned in article 51A of part-IVA of constitution

2. From where did fundamental duties originate?

It was originally not contained in constitution, included by 42nd amendment 1976 under recommendation of Swaran Singh committee.

3. Who told to build laws on fundamental duties?

Justice Verma committee report on teaching fundamental duties to citizens set up in 1999, report presented in 2000 and in 2003 Supreme Court told to formulate laws on duties.

4. How many fundamental duties are there?

Originally ten were there, added one in 2002, so now eleven

They were inspired by Russian constitution and based on Japanese model

No penalty is imposed; however it is left for the legislatures to decide

List of Duties are:

- Respect constitution, national flag and national anthem

- Follow noble ideals for national struggle for freedom

- Protect sovereign and integrity

- Promote brotherhood devoid of religions and protect dignity of women

- Defend country and provide national service when called

- Preserve rich heritage of country

- Protect environment, forest, wildlife etc

- Develop scientific temper, spirit of reform

- Safeguard public property

- Strive for excellence to progress nation

- Education of child from six to fourteen (86th amendment 2002)
