There was a confusion regarding the successor of Muhammad after his death in 632 AD as he did not appoint any successor to lead the Muslim community. Some believed that a successor should only be chosen from his descendent while others thought a successor should be chosen from among his followers. Eventually his follower Abu Bakr was made khalifa. But Abu Bakr’s two successors were assassinated and Ali, the prophet’s cousin and son in law was made Khalifa.Again, Ali was assassinated in Kufa along with his two sons Hasan and Hussain and many of his relatives were massacred in Karbala in Iraq in 680AD. These incidents divided Islam into two parts. Those who followed Ali were came to be known as Shias while those who followed the first three Khalifs before Ali were came to be known as Sunnis.
