17. How is Presidential election held?

Election is held by proportional representation of single transferable vote by secret ballot. Vote is given by members of both houses of parliament, legislatures of state, legislatures of union territories of Delhi and Pondicherry. Nominated members don’t participate. Dispute regarding election solved by Supreme Court. Security deposit for nomination as President is 15000/- to be kept in RBI. All these are mentioned in Article 54

18. What are the conditions of impeachment of the President?

Impeachment is initiated by either house of parliament. Charges should be signed by one fourth of members of house. 14 days of advance notice to be issued after passing notion is sent to other house to investigate charges where President have right to appear. If other house sustains charges then President is removed at that time and date (Article 61)

19. How is vacancy held for President?

Vacancy is held on expiration of term, resignation, impeachment or death (Article 62). Election held to fill vacancy before term expiry (if death) or within 6months from vacancy (other cases) (Article 62). President is eligible for re-election.

20. What are the qualifications of becoming a President?

All the qualifications are mentioned in Article 58. Following are them:

- He should be an Indian of age at least 35 years (no maximum age)

- He should be qualified like any member of Lok Sabha

- He should not hold any office of profit under any Government offices apart from President, Vice President, Governor or any ministers.


21. What are the conditions of office of the President?

Following are them:

- He should not be a member of any house and must not hold any office of profit (Article-59).

- He can use Rashtrapati Bhavan without paying rent (Article 59).

- Emolument and privileges determined by parliament cannot be diminished during his term (Article 59).

- Holds office for 5yrs (Article 56).

- May resign by writing to Vice President (Article 56)
